After a bacon-heavy morning in Krezk, Julius became convinced the burgomaster’s household was being haunted by a dead twin: he saw duplicate children, learned one had been buried overnight, and later glimpsed the matching boy again beside his living brother. Vasilka chose to remain in town while the party boarded an ale wagon for Vallaki with Esmeralda and their stitched carriage driver, Topo Chico “Stitch” Malik. Azareal’s new druidic awakening gave him speech with animals and an impulsive horse form, letting Elora ride him bareback down the road. The comedy ended when the smell of death heralded skeletal riders hidden behind magical fog. Ja’ms’s Color Spray exposed them, Drisella’s summoned wolves and hawks tore through the rear guard, and a reckless Thunderwave finished most of the ambush. Farther on, the road became a shifting magical labyrinth of contradictory signs, looping paths, snowfall, false bodies hanging from trees, and a charging red-eyed bull. Namta’s attempt to read Stitch’s mind revealed a deafening multitude of voices, while the party ultimately chose the only route Ja’ms’s Detect Magic found unenchanted. As the wagon finally rolls onward, Julius and Elora share a long-delayed kiss beneath Azareal’s approving horse noises.

Developing Situations
  • Find a way through the shifting road-labyrinth and reach Vallaki with the remaining ale shipment intact.
  • Determine what Topo Chico “Stitch” Malik truly is, why his mind contains a crushing multitude of voices, and whether he can safely guide the caravan.
  • Decide how much to trust Esmeralda after she concealed seeing visions of her father, sister, and Van Richten among the hanging bodies.
  • Investigate the recurring apparitions of the burgomaster's dead twin son and the unsettling history of the Krezkov children.
  • Continue protecting Vasilka in Krezk while deciding how to address Ilya's unnatural condition and the wider fallout from the Abbey.
  • Pursue leads on Lukan, Van Richten, and the party's unresolved djinn curses once Vallaki is reached.
Major Events
A Second Son at Breakfast
Julius awoke early from his nightmare, searched Azareal's books for religious guidance, and witnessed a silver gem lock itself into Azareal's Lythander symbol after a dream visitation by a shining pegasus. Soon afterward, Julius heard four sets of footsteps leave the burgomaster's room and saw what appeared to be two identical boys, complete with the same mole and dark hair. Family photos only deepened the confusion. Esmeralda later explained that she had buried one of Dimitri's sons during the night, while the cheerful blond child at breakfast was an adopted son. She also described a grim family history involving an eldest son lost on the road to Ravenloft, another dismembered at the Abbey, and twin boys of whom one had recently died after the Abbot's treatment. Julius was not reassured: when the wagon departed, he looked back to see the dead-looking twin standing beside his brother again.
A Horse Named Azareal
The party left Krezk with Esmeralda, the ale cargo, and their carriage driver, Topo Chico “Stitch” Malik, a stitched being whose lack of a normal heartbeat immediately caught Julius's attention. Azareal revealed his new druid multiclass abilities by understanding Quincy, Spike, and the wagon horses. Overhearing the horses compare shared nightmares of broken legs proved too compelling; he accidentally spent his sole Wild Shape to become a white horse and attempted to join the conversation. Elora enthusiastically mounted him while the group rode onward, and Azareal discovered both the joy of running at full speed and the indignities of equine digestion. Julius, meanwhile, quietly shaved silver from one of his arrows into purchased water, then used his first clerical blessing in the coming battle. The road acquired a new mascot, and Azareal acquired a new reason to blush whenever Elora mentioned riding.
Skeletons Behind the Fog
A worsening scent of rot, dirt, algae, and mildew warned the party that something dead was following. Elora spent a spell slot on Primeval Awareness and felt undead closing in, while Azareal's horse form hurried alongside the wagon. The attackers remained hidden behind a magical fog wall until Ja'ms hurled Color Spray into it, revealing skeletal riders on skeletal mounts. Stitch deployed fold-out combat platforms from the wagon, and the party answered quickly: Elora pinned riders with precise arrows, Drisella conjured four wolves and four hawks that mauled one target apart, and Namta's Fire Bolt briefly made a skeleton wear Ja'ms's face. Julius used silver-laced holy water to cast Bless on Drisella, Namta, and Ja'ms. Ja'ms then unleashed Thunderwave from the wagon, knocking out the canopy and blasting the clustered skeletal force apart—while also catching several allies in the shockwave. Spike finished the last rider by leaping for its skull and enthusiastically claiming his bones.
The Crossroads That Remember
The post-ambush road turned into something much worse than a bad map. At a crossroads, every sign contradicted itself: Krezk pointed both forward and back, Vallaki pointed east and west, and other destinations inverted across the signposts. Elora's ranger instincts found heavy traffic on the second path, while Azareal's Detect Evil and Good saw the least inky corruption there, so the caravan chose it. The route soon looped them into another altered crossroads under faint snowfall, where the signs had shifted and three bodies hung from a tree down the third road. Elora recognized the shape of a magical maze; the bodies appeared to each observer as different dead party members, sending her into panic until Julius and Drisella talked her back to the present. The hanging corpses became only branches when Julius cut them down, but the road's tricks had already done their work.
Truth, Tracks, and the Unmagical Road
Esmeralda returned from a separate path claiming she had only followed tracks, but Elora caught the omission: Esmeralda had also seen bodies resembling her father, sister, and Van Richten. Azareal drew blood on his transformed holy symbol to cast Zone of Truth, and Esmeralda finally admitted she wanted only to escape, find her mentor, and kill Strahd—while refusing to let the tree-visions delay her. Meanwhile, Namta secretly read Stitch's thoughts and was hit by thousands of overlapping voices, barely extracting a child's refrain that “home is always this way.” The driver seemed to lose hold of a single identity whenever the road's magic twisted around him. Julius tested the second route alone, found a red-eyed bull charging through the mist, and escaped back to the group with his boots. Finally, Ja'ms cast Detect Magic and found enchantment on every available route except the third. The party chose that unmagical road, moved on at last, and Julius and Elora sealed the reprieve with a kiss.
