The breakfast massacre erupts into a frantic escape attempt when Azareal invokes Lathander and fills Ravenloft’s dining hall with Daylight. The vampire spawn burn beneath the impossible sun, but the party learns quickly that the castle’s magic is only temporarily permitting it. Namta bolts for the open door after blasting Lukan with Firebolt, while Ja’ms lands a radiant axe strike and escapes a fumbling spawn. Elora confronts Lukan instead of fleeing outright; he admits he summoned her under Strahd’s direction and claims she could become Ravenloft’s queen, but refuses to explain what happened at her house. When he says her friends are already dead, she shoots him and retreats. Drisella binds and beheads a spawn with a natural 20, while Julius batters Lukan and another spawn before running for the exit. Then the daylight abruptly breaks. Strahd calls off his servants, insists the party cannot leave Castle Ravenloft, and demands they sit for a peaceful conversation. As Julius reluctantly approaches the table, Crush confesses it used another victim’s blood to sustain itself; the living gauntlet melts away from Julius’s heart into droplets on the floor.

Developing Situations
- Decide whether to accept Strahd’s demanded breakfast conversation, resist him, or find another route out of Castle Ravenloft.
- Determine what Strahd truly wants from the party and whether his promise to return them after breakfast means anything.
- Get the truth from Lukan about the bracelet, Elora’s past capture, his loyalty to Strahd, and his claim that Elora could rule as queen.
- Find out whether Crush can be restored after dissolving from Julius’s heart, and reckon with the cost of its attempt to survive on stolen blood.
- Protect the party while Ravenloft’s wards can abruptly break or suppress their magic.

Azareal Brings the Sun
With nine vampire spawn crowding the dining hall and Strahd seated at the far end of the table simply watching, Azareal opened the fight with a full invocation of Daylight. He bled against his pointed sun amulet, called on Lathander, and flooded the entire room with sunlight before Misty Stepping to the exit and kicking the door open. The spell did not immediately injure the vampires, but each spawn beginning its turn in the light took radiant damage, burned visibly, lost its regeneration, and attacked with disadvantage. Azareal reinforced the escape with Warding Flare, turning a clawing attack on Ja’ms into a complete miss. The sudden blaze gave the party its first real opening, turning Ravenloft’s dining room into a brief, glorious imitation of morning.
Run First, Fight Second
Most of the party seized Azareal’s opening. Namta checked that Ja’ms was unhurt, ran for the door, and sent Dick away from the blinding room before turning back long enough to Firebolt Lukan. A luck-assisted attack struck him for 12 damage. Ja’ms answered the spawn beside him with True Strike and a radiant axe blow, then escaped as its opportunity attack sent it sprawling instead. Drisella used Earthbind on the spawn threatening her, drew her sickle, and immediately rolled a natural 20 to take its head off. Julius shaped Crush into a javelin and fought his way free, striking both Lukan and a nearby spawn, knocking the spawn prone with Open Hand Technique, and making a run for the door. The dining hall briefly became a chaotic relay race toward daylight, bodies, and safety.
Elora Refuses Lukan’s Answer
Elora did not simply flee with the others. Bow lowered but ready, she confronted Lukan over the bracelet and the reason he had brought her to Ravenloft. Lukan admitted that he had sent the bracelet after Strahd supplied the idea, then insisted that he wanted to show her Barovia and make her its queen rather than another vampire. He would not explain what happened when Elora was captured at her house, claiming that he could not speak freely before people who might misunderstand. When Elora told him that staying would doom her friends, Lukan coldly replied that they had already been dead from the moment they entered Castle Ravenloft. Elora loosed an arrow, missed at close range, then moved toward the exit and fired again. The second shot was a natural 20; she deliberately aimed to incapacitate rather than kill, but the arrow still tore through Lukan’s side and buried itself in Strahd’s chair.
Strahd Calls for Peace and Crush Vanishes
When Azareal’s turn came around again, the sunlight shattered without warning. Strahd rose from his chair, snapped his fingers, and every surviving spawn stopped fighting. He framed the violence as an unfortunate response to the party attacking his associate, then invited everyone back to the table for a civilized conversation. His gentleness had teeth: the drawbridge would not come down, no one could leave at their discretion, and their only alternative was trying to run through Castle Ravenloft. Julius tested the ceasefire by kicking the prone spawn, then began moving toward a chair while offering Strahd stories. At that moment he felt pain from his heart down to Crush. The living weapon admitted it had tried to sustain itself with blood from someone Julius had stabbed rather than Julius’s own blood, and that the shortcut had failed. The gauntlet dissolved into watery droplets as its bond painfully pulled free, leaving Julius staring at an empty arm and a floor wet with what had been his companion.
