Carnies, Gems, and No Map
The party crash-lands in one of the most powerful cities in the world and immediately starts running cons. How did a casual dock arrival turn into the party's smoothest logistical win yet, and what did it quietly cost them?

The party crash-lands onto the docks of Waterdeep in the chaotic aftermath of Azareal's ship-destroying blessing, arriving alongside the surviving human crew and a cascade of chests and cargo from the destroyed vessel. As the group collects itself, several members take advantage of the distraction to loot nearby boxes, with Orange Julius prying dark gemstones off an abandoned jacket and Namta helping herself to a cloak and two ornate ceremonial daggers. Elora quickly scans for danger, clocking nearby unsavory types eyeing the scattered goods. The party's attention is then captured by a colorful troupe of traveling performers called the Vistani, who are parading through town promoting a festival. Elora approaches their leader and, after learning the Vistani regularly travel to Ravenloft, successfully negotiates passage for the band under the guise of being Siren's Wail's manager. A detour into a cartography shop called Maps Maps Maps confirms that Ravenloft appears on no known map, reinforcing that the Vistani are the party's best lead. Azareal slips into a spell shop to store a secret spell, and the group levels up before heading toward the Vistani camp.

Developing Situations
  • Determine the nature and value of the two dark gemstones Julius pried from the abandoned jacket, as they may be rare or dangerous artifacts
  • Establish the terms of traveling with the Vistani and what, if anything, the party is expected to provide or perform in exchange for passage to Ravenloft
  • Uncover what the Vistani matriarch — the head of the entire family — wants or knows, as the party has only met a troop leader so far
  • Find out what Namta knows or suspects about the Vistani that made her visibly anxious during the encounter
  • Prepare for arrival at Ravenloft, a place of legend that no one in the party has ever seen and that exists on no known map
Major Events
Looting the Docks
As the party tumbled onto the Waterdeep docks amid scattered cargo and disoriented crew, several members seized the opportunity to rifle through unclaimed chests. Orange Julius stealthed successfully with a total of 15 and then rolled a 10 on his search, turning up a fine winter jacket with two dark gemstones sewn onto the lapel, which he pried off and pocketed along with 10 gold. Namta also stealthed and rolled a 13, discovering a chest full of ornate ceremonial daggers with gem-encrusted sheaths and snagging two of the most jeweled ones, along with a black cloak. Drisella, meanwhile, found a collection of small supply barrels containing young onions, citrus fruit, and nuts, which she bundled up in knotted handkerchiefs and carried along. Elora used Insight to scan for immediate threats and, with a 13, determined no one was there to harm the party directly, though several shady onlookers were clearly eyeing the unattended goods.
Meeting the Vistani
A colorful parade of performers suddenly swept through the docks area — a troupe of about ten to twelve people in greens, reds, and oranges, wearing gold sashes hung with jingling metal coins. They were the Vistani, a nomadic carny-like group known to travel the entire plane, sell potions and elixirs, and put on elaborate shows. Their leader, an older woman with a distinctive sliver of red hair visible beneath her veil, announced their festival and offered goods that could only be found in their tents. Elora rolled a 21 on her history check and recognized them immediately, then approached the leader directly. She introduced herself as the manager of Siren's Wail and asked for passage to Ravenloft. The leader confirmed the Vistani perform at Ravenloft regularly and that it was their next destination, offering the party a place in their caravan. Elora's Insight roll of 13 confirmed the woman appeared genuinely truthful and welcoming.
The Maps Maps Maps Dead End
Hoping to find a map to Ravenloft before relying entirely on the Vistani, Elora led the group into a cartography shop operated by an elderly Dragonborn woman named Yaa. Elora addressed her in Draconic. Yaa confirmed that Ravenloft does not appear on any known map, but pointed the party back toward the Vistani as their best source of guidance, noting they frequent the area and speak of it often. When Yaa attempted to sell them four show tickets for 10 gold — tickets she had previously been talked into buying herself — Elora pushed back and tried to take them for free. Yaa held firm, stating plainly that this was a shop and she needed to make her money. Orange Julius ultimately offered 5 gold for the four tickets, and the negotiation concluded. The shop visit confirmed the party's only viable route to Ravenloft runs through the Vistani.
Azareal's Secret Spell
While the group moved through Waterdeep's busy streets, Azareal slipped into a magic shop called the Source Spell Store, run by a small goblin proprietor. Azareal purchased a small circular spellbook from among the many shapes on offer, and after choosing its color, spent a third-level spell slot to inscribe a spell into it — the nature of which he kept entirely to himself. Namta spotted him glowing brightly inside the shop and dragged him out by the hand before he could get into further trouble or spend more. The interaction was brief, but the stored spell now sits quietly in Azareal's new little book, known only to him.

Dock to Table
While everyone else was assessing danger, looting chests, or vomiting overboard, you had your priorities perfectly in order: food first, heroics later. You foraged six mini kegs of onions, citrus, and nuts off a chaotic explosion-strewn dock and fashioned a handkerchief bindle like a tiny Depression-era adventurer. Quincy approves.
Manager Of The Year (Self-Appointed)
Elora Meridian
Manager Of The Year (Self-Appointed)
Within minutes of crash-landing onto a foreign dock, you had already sweet-talked a carnival troupe into ferrying the entire party to a mythical destination, gotten four free show tickets for five gold, insulted a map shop owner, and declared yourself the band's manager — all while your hand never left your dagger. Networking has never looked so threatening.
Cloak and Dagger and Dagger
Namta
Cloak and Dagger and Dagger
While everyone else was still picking dock splinters out of their hair, you calmly rolled stealth, cracked open a mystery chest, and walked away with a designer cloak and two gem-encrusted ceremonial daggers that are probably worth more than the rest of the party combined. You didn't even need them. You just saw shiny and acted accordingly.

Secret Spellbook, Secret Shame
Fresh off healing an entire cursed ghost ship into oblivion, you wandered away from the group mid-city tour, bought a tiny circular spellbook from an enthusiastic goblin, and immediately began filling it with a mystery spell that you refused to share with anyone. Namta dragged you away by the hand before you could do anything worse. The book glowed. Nobody asked.

Finders Keepers, Appraiser Weepers
You ripped two suspiciously dark gemstones off a random jacket in the chaos of a dock explosion, casually tossed the jacket back, then spent the rest of the session trying to figure out if you accidentally stole something cursed, kingly, or completely worthless. The gems might be Moon's Eye artifacts. They might be craft store obsidian. Only time — and a very nervous jeweler — will tell.

I Forgot I Made Him A Eunuch
You lovingly crafted a zombie ship mystery with a sinister supernatural engine at its core — a whole layered dungeon of secrets — only to open the session by cheerfully announcing you forgot one of your own key NPCs had no genitals. The players never even reached the ship's heart. They just exploded it. You're fine. Everything is fine.

Method Actor, Method Disguise
Faced with the terrifying prospect of being recognized as a famous musician in a massive port city, your brilliant solution was to produce a furry stick-on beard from your bag and simply... put it on. The disguise was not sophisticated. The commitment, however, was absolute.
